Bioplastic

A bioplastic is any plastic that is produced wholly or partly from plants rather than from petrochemicals. Despite what the name might imply, bioplastics are not necessarily any more biodegradable than petrochemical-derived plastics. Moreover, at present they are largely produced from corn that has been both genetically modified and grown using large quantities of synthetic herbicides. The main advantage for plastics manufacturers is that the raw materials can be cheaper than petroleum-derived materials when petroleum prices rise. Bioplastics currently account for less than one percent of total world plastics production.
